AFFIXES
The word stem -man(u)- (meaning hand) occurs in many words. Add an affix (either a prefix or a suffix) to this stem to make another word. Each participant should add a different word to the list.

But, Alexandra, "mandatory" has a different root (and a slightly different meaning):
late 15th cent.: from late Latin mandatorius, from Latin mandatum ‘something commanded.’
Hmm, according to Merriam Webster the origin of mandatory is mandate and mandate comes from "manus hand + -dere to put"...

We just have to go back one more step to see that mandatum/mandate also has its origins in the Latin word for hand.
