*SENTENCE COMBINATION*

Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important writing skill. There are many ways to do this. Try to combine the following three sentences.

Sentence 1We are well into December.

Sentence 2The first snowfall of the season was weeks ago.
Sentence 3It won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

We are well into December so the first snowfall of the season was weeks ago and thankfully, it won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

The first snowfall of the season was weeks ago. We are well into December and it won't be long until Christmas vacation is here.

We are well into the December and the first snowfall was weeks ago, so it won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

We are well into December; although, the first snowfall of the season was weeks ago so it won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

Good try, everyone!

I think you got it exactly right, Sabrina!

But, Eugenie, adding "thankfully" introduces an unnecessary change to the meaning of the sentence.

Jefferson, you have written two sentences.

Sarah, I don't think the use of "although" really fits the logic of your sentence.

For those who had trouble, remember to begin by asking yourself what the logic of the relationship between the clauses might be.

For example, it makes sense to say the following:

We are well into December, so it won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

Then we just need to figure out how the remaining sentence fits:

The first snowfall of the season was weeks ago, and we are well into December, so it won't be long until the Christmas vacation.

The first clause suggests that winter is well advanced, and the second, that we are nearing the end of December. Both of these point to the coming of Christmas holidays.
