Sentence 1. Add a phrase:    December is almost upon us to the delight of skiers.
 
Sentence 2. Add a dependent clause: Whether or not you are ready for winter, December is almost upon us.


Sentence 3. Add an independent clause: December is almost upon us, and many outdoor skating rinks in Calgary are now open to the public.

Aliocha, your first and last sentence uses a comma splice, and your second sentence does not add a dependent clause (it makes the original clause dependent).

Sarah, your first sentence sounds questionable, and your second has a comma splice (and doesn't include a dependent clause).
